A graduate of Morehouse College, the composer and organist Wendell Whalum was for thirty-four years Director of the Morehouse College Glee Club, which achieved national and international acclaim under his leadership. His powerful arrangement of the beautiful spiritual “The Lily of the Valley” builds in intensity before fading into a hushed, serene conclusion.

He’s the Lily of the valley, oh, my Lord.

I’ve never been to heaven but I’ve been told,
That the streets up there are paved with gold,
What kind of shoes are those You wear?
That You can walk up in the air.
These shoes I wear are gospel shoes,
And You can wear these if You choose.

He’s the Lily of the valley, oh, my Lord.
