about

Craig Phillips is Director of Music at All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Beverly Hills, California. “I Beseech You Therefore, Brethren” was originally commissioned by members of the Class of 1978 to celebrate the retirement of The Reverend Professor Peter J. Gomes; it has now become a memorial to his legacy. The text—a favorite of Professor Gomes—highlights the importance of charitable service and sacrifice, sentiments that are a fitting tribute to his lifelong work. The music is lilting and comforting, and builds to a rousing central peak, before dying away back to the mood of the opening.

lyrics

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
